A BELOVED COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE

Growing food, healing, and collective care in East Oakland.

The 47th Avenue Beloved Community Garden is a living expression of Beloved Communities Network’s vision to cultivate “ten thousand beloved communities.” Together, neighbors are transforming land into a shared space of nourishment, learning, stewardship, and belonging.

More than a garden

This is not simply a place where food is grown. It is a community of practice rooted in healing justice, mutual aid, deep democracy, and collective care.

In partnership with Tandi Family Farms, the garden serves as a community-managed space where neighbors grow fresh organic food, share knowledge across generations, and strengthen relationships through collective stewardship.

Designed using permaculture principles, the garden supports sustainable food production while creating opportunities for connection, learning, and community leadership.

WHAT WE'RE GROWING TOGETHER

Fresh Food

Organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs grown for neighborhood nourishment and distribution.

Knowledge & Skills

Hands-on learning in gardening, composting, cooking, and sustainable food practices.

Community Care

Relationships rooted in trust, belonging, cultural connection, and shared responsibility.

Leadership

Opportunities for youth, families, elders, and neighbors to shape and steward the space together.

A DIFFERENT MODEL OF FOOD JUSTICE

Many food programs operate through a transactional model that provides food to people in need. Our approach is different. At the 47th Avenue Beloved Community Garden, people are not recipients. They are co-creators.

Neighbors participate in every aspect of the garden, from design and planting to harvesting and community meals. Through this work, food becomes more than sustenance. It becomes a pathway toward healing, connection, dignity, and collective liberation.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE GARDEN

Biweekly Volunteer Days

Hands-on opportunities to plant, maintain, and steward the garden together.

Cooking Classes

Community-centered cooking experiences rooted in culture, nourishment, and seasonal harvests.

Community Meals

Quarterly gatherings that celebrate food, culture, and connection through shared meals.

Workshops & Skill Sharing

Learning opportunities focused on gardening, harvesting, composting, sustainability, and land stewardship.

ROOTED ACROSS GENERATIONS

Young people are central to this work. Through hands-on participation, youth build confidence, leadership, and a deeper understanding of food systems, environmental stewardship, and collective care.

The garden also creates space for elders and caregivers to share stories, cultural traditions, and wisdom across generations — strengthening community through shared learning and relationship.

WHY THIS MATTERS

East Oakland communities continue to face barriers to accessing fresh, affordable, and culturally relevant food, along with limited access to land and green space.

The 47th Avenue Beloved Community Garden helps build community-owned food infrastructure that supports long-term nourishment, resilience, ecological stewardship, and belonging.

This work is about more than food access. It is about cultivating the conditions for communities to thrive together.

A MODEL THAT CAN GROW

The 47th Avenue Beloved Community Garden is designed as a replicable model for community-rooted stewardship and collective care.

By strengthening participation, leadership, and shared responsibility, we are creating a framework that communities can adapt and grow in their own neighborhoods.

This is how we cultivate beloved communities:
one garden, one relationship, one shared meal at a time.
